CA Water-Wise Garden

Project type

Suburban Garden

Date

2023

Location

Santa Monica, CA

We worked with the city of Santa Monica to remove the front lawn of this residence, update the existing irrigation with a more efficient system, and plant drought-tolerant (native, near-native, and non-invasive) species. The homeowner also wanted to update the driveway and add a small patio in the front. What better way to enjoy your morning coffee than being immersed in a little slice of nature? The substantial root from the hundred-year-old ficus, at first, posed a problem. Instead of removing it, we worked with it to create one edge of a pathway. This turned out to be one of my favorite details. We also focused a great deal on storm water management. When it rains, it pours in Southern California, so we wanted to take advantage of those downpours when they happen. We designed two dry creek beds, fed by downspouts, that collect and then direct runoff through the yard into stormwater systems. Once the garden is established, many of the plants have deep taproots and will be able to take advantage of the water funneled deep into the ground. Since we planted this garden, hummingbirds, butterflies, and all kinds of pollinators flock here, and the scent of sage is intoxicating.
